If you notice a lot of nattily dressed folks spilling out of the Asbury Park Yacht Club on the evening of Saturday, May 18, it can mean only one thing:The Bryan Bruden Summer Blast Off Rock ‘n’ Roll Dance Party is in town.
The Bruden soiree has become the hot spot for cool cats and kittens on the weekend before Memorial Day on the Jersey Shore.
“It’s really is a super great time, if I do say so myself,” said Bruden via email. “And I should know, I’ve been around ... and it shows. Plus, my stand-up comedy routine might actually be funny this year. It’s very Jersey Shore-centric.”
Bruden, the longtime host of WRSU of Rutgers University’s “Overnight Sensations,” has the kind of decadent daring and tigerprint appeal that rock ‘n’ roll needs more of these days. He’s spinning records along with DJ Appetite at the Blast Off, and Holmes and the Jeremy Wallace Trio will rock the boards.

It’s almost a shame it happens only once a year.
“It’s an excellent rock ‘n’ roll dance party, besides two awesome bands,” Bruden said. “You got two experienced deejays — deejays that know how to read the vibe.”
The end of the world
Meet Jesse Malin at the end of the world.
Well, figuratively, anyway. Or at the Stone Pony. Malin posted a pic of himself holding a T-Shirt that read, “Meet me at the end of the world” recently on his social media as a tease for his show Friday, May 17, at the Pony in Asbury Park.
Malin and his band will be performing “The Fine Art of Self Destruction,” his 2003 solo debut after his run with L.E.S. punkers D Generation.
If that’s not enough, Danny Clinch and the Tangiers Blues Band, Adam Weiner from Low Cut Connie and Matty Carlock and the Jailbirds also will be performing.
Carlock of Middletown, formerly lead vocalist for Shai Hulud, just released the stellar album “The Jailbirds.” Carlock and Rob Sellig dropped a new video for the album track “Jeralyn,” on which Clinch does a little vocal duty.
The show is the record release party for "Jailbirds," which also featuresMalin.
"It's a true honor to do my record release with (Clinch and Malin) at such an iconicvenue," said Carlock via email. "The entire record was influenced by small town, suburban, outcast love. Aggression, frustration, and love like violence so I can't wait to rush this stage with my band."
"We're using our tragedies to connect with people through thepower of music."
The end of the world Friday at the Pony should be a very interesting night. The show was originally scheduled for May 4.
Jesse Malin performing “The Fine Art of Self Destruction” and more with Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie, Danny Clinch and the Tangiers Blues Band, and Matty Carlock and the Jailbirds, 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, Stone Pony, 913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park. $22 in advance/$25 at the door. www.stoneponyonline.com.
Yappy Hour Skylands benefit
Brianna the cow became a celebrity late last year when she made a dash from a truck on Route 80 in Paterson headed to a slaughterhouse.
The Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue from Wantage corralled her and took her to the sanctuary, where she promptly had a baby calf.
The Skylands folks named the baby Winter.
The folks at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park are saying thanks to the Skylands team with a special Yappy Hour benefit, noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19. Admission is $5 and more is being accepted on behalf of Skylands.
So this week, it’s a moo instead of a yap, but we’re sure there will still be plenty of yaps, too.
Yappy Hour benefit for the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue, noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19, Wonder Bar, Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park. $5. wonderbarasburypark.com.
