(AP) Byron (Low Tax) Looper said he is out of money and wants the state to pay his defense expenses for his trial for killing state Sen. Tommy Burks. "It's just not realistic I can maintain an adequate defense with the extraordinary assets and resources that the state is putting in this case against me," he testified Tuesday in a pretrial hearing.

Prosecutors said Looper still has some money and argued taxpayers should not pay for Looper to bring in expert witnesses. Judge J. S. Daniel said he wanted more information before he ruled. Burks was found shot to death on his farm in Monterey last Oct.

19. Looper, 34, was arrested four days later. Looper, who was seeking to unseat Burks in the Senate, has pleaded innocent. His trial is set for Aug. 23.

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence without parole. Since Looper's arrest, Burks's widow, Charlotte, defeated Looper in a write-in campaign for the Senate seat, and Looper was replaced as Putnam County property assessor. Looper entered court Tuesday with a mustache, but he quickly left and shaved it off, holding up the court 20 mi minutes before he took the stand. Also testifying Tuesday was Looper's former roommate and ex-FBI informant John Wayne Dedman, who told the court Looper's attorney Doug Trant offered to pay him if he would help clear Looper of the murder charges. Trant denied the charge and played a tape in which Dist.

Atty. Bill Gibson supposedly asked Dedmon to frame Looper. Gibson called the tape a fraud, and the judge agreed. If bronze marker turns up in yard, call the of Ark. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.

(AP) Folks visiting the University of Arkansas campus can stroll past Old Main and take a gander at a black pole poking up from the east lawn. Officials planned a more enjoyable sight. Attached to the pole was a 50-pound historical marker. Two weeks after an April 27 dedication ceremony to mark the installation, somebody made off with the marker. "I just don't understand where anybody would have a spot for it.

What are they going to do, put it up in their yard?" wondered Mike Macechko, executive director of the Arkansas Alumni Association. The association paid $1,000 each for the cast bronze markers. The stolen marker commemorates "Senior Walk," the series of sidewalks stretching across campus and inscribed with the names of graduates. University police spokesman Gary Crain said police probably won't solve the crime unless a witness comes forward.
